Cue Integration in the Perception of Korean Fricatives
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent literature on Korean fricatives has shown that the perception of the plain /s/ over the fortis /s*/ correlates to low f0 onset of the following vowel, despite the fact that there is no such correlation in the production of /s/ over /s*/. The integration of f0 with other low frequency cues that covary more reliably with /s/ presents a possible explanation for this disparity between production and perception. In a fixed classification experiment, native Korean speakers distinguished between stimuli that differed in intervocalic voicing and f0 onset following /s/. Results showed the integration of these two cues into a single low-frequency intermediate perceptual property. UC Berkeley Phonology Lab Annual Report (2013)

Perceptual integration of acoustic cues to laryngeal contrasts in Korean fricatives.
This paper provides evidence that multiple acoustic cues involving the presence of low-frequency energy integrate in the perception of Korean coronal fricatives. This finding helps explain a surprising asymmetry between the production and perception of these fricatives found in previous studies: lower F0 onset in the following vowel leads to a response bias for plain [s] over fortis [s*], despi...
متن کاملThe contribution of vowel duration, F0 contour, and frication duration as cues to the /juz/-/jus/ distinction.
A model was quantified to describe the integration of vowel duration, fricative duration, and fundamental frequency (F0) contour as cues to final position fricatives differing in voicing. The basic assumptions are that perceived vowel duration and perceived frication duration are cues to the identity of final position fricatives and that both Fo contour and vowel duration influence perceived vo...
متن کاملEffect of native language experience on audio-visual perception of English fricatives by Korean and Mandarin natives
This study examines how native language (L1) experience affects audio-visual (AV) perception of nonnative (L2) speech. Mandarin, Korean, and English perceivers were presented English CV syllables containing fricatives with 3 places of articulation: labiodentals nonexistent in Korean, interdentals nonexistent in Korean and Mandarin, and alveolars occurring in all L1s. The stimuli were presented ...
متن کاملContextually dependent cue weighting for a laryngeal contrast in Shanghai Wu
Phonological categories are often differentiated by multiple phonetic cues. This paper reports a production and perception study of a laryngeal contrast in Shanghai Wu that is not only cued in multiple dimensions, but also cued differently on different manners (stops, fricatives, sonorants) and in different positions (non-sandhi, sandhi). Acoustic results showed that although this contrast has ...
متن کاملA Study of Korean Alveolar Fricatives an Acoustic Analysis, Synthesis and Perception Experiment
Korean has two types of voiceless alveolar fricatives One is called aspirated and the other tense (Kagaya, 1974) The aspirated fricatives have also been called lax fricatives because phonolog1cally they act hke a lax obstruent, undergomg a set of processes that lax stops do For example, Korean lax stops and Isl undergo post-obstruent tensmg {Sohn 1999) Aspirated stops (e g, ch), however, do not...
